Frooly.com to cease trading

We attempted to save independent retailers and reverse the decline of our high streets.

After 2 years development, and despite significant growth in the last quarter, it is with regret that we announce the closure of Frooly Ltd.

In a climate of recession, retail gloom and discount deals – it’s very expensive to launch a marketplace selling luxury and unique goods.

However, with 1,300+ businesses on board and sufficient growth funding secured, we were confident of the year ahead - our
London office was due to open in Feb 2012 and we were trading in good faith.

Unfortunately, as of January 16th, this funding position unexpectedly changed.

Factors beyond our control have affected investor confidence (chargeback’s, shop non delivery of orders, heavily funded competitors etc) – without the planned for investment round in January, we are no longer able to meet our obligations and have no time to make alternative arrangements.

Despite the tremendous backing and support from our Board, we are unable to find a way through it on this occasion. Many investors have decided that a high cost retail business is too risky to fund in the current environment – the only option available is to close the business.

Professionally we are hugely disappointed, and consider many of our trading partners friends. Launching a business is very difficult; we have risked everything and sweated blood to reach this position – only to fall short of capital at a crucial time.

On a personal note, we are devastated with this announcement and particularly with the inconvenience and distress it may caus
e our fantastic team, supporters and customers. This was out of our hands and only confirmed last week and we certainly didn’t want to put you in a bad personal position.

We’d like to thank Carl, Matt, Emma and all past/present members of the Frooly team for the hard work, great company and shared vision. Both Gemma and I have learnt and experienced things money can’t buy and will be forever wiser for it.

Frooly.com will be turned off on Monday 6th February 2012.

Sadly, frooly.com will be turned off for good on Monday 6th Feb. We strongly advise all shops/websites to log into your site and copy/save your content as it will not be available after that date.

Other cool places to shop and sell...

There are lots of amazing marketplaces - the list isn't exhaustive (sorry if we missed you out) but these guys are worth a look

What next?

Both our sellers and customers will receive a personal mail with more information about the closure. Gemma and I will be putting our reflections and thoughts down in more detailed blog posts over the coming weeks.

We have a lot to deal with and do hope to keep your faith and trust as we piece a way through this with the best intentions.

We are still passionate about supporting independent retailers, and empowering young people – and after a much needed break - hope to work with you again.

Thank you for your support, and please accept our sincerest apologies if you are inconvenienced by this sudden news.

We dared to dream, and worked really hard – but it wasn’t to be.

Kind regards

Michael Ord, Gemma Baldan and the Frooly Board

Please accept our apologies but we are unable to answer phone calls.

Hi all,

A quick glance at http://www.frooly.com/for-business/ show's we've simplified our pricing offerings, down to just two packages.
  • All new customers get put on this new pricing automatically
  • Existing customers retain their original tariff but can switch by clicking upgrade in the top right from their website whilst logged in

We've developed a new "Notification" system for email. Basically these are email reminders and triggers, the system will mail you under certain criteria (such as if you've forgot to update an order as dispatched) to remind you! or sometimes to reward you if you've met the criteria of certain behaviour!

It's that time of the year, you're off on your joliies and definitely don't want disturbing. No problem, pop your shop in Holiday Mode.

3) Scroll all the way to the bottom of the Add Ons page

Once you've removed your shop, all your products will be safely hidden.

Top Tip #3 - Save Time with Frooly - Integrated with Facebook, Google Shopping and more

Time is money is Time. Updating your website and facebook page can be a time sink, which is the last thing you need when running your boutique business.

By integrating your frooly shop with your facebook page you get the benefit of getting more by doing less (aka the Holy Grail!)

Add a product to your shop and it goes to:
1) your shop (of course)
2) the frooly.com marketplace
3) Google Shopping and
4) Facebook Fanpage and all your 100’s hundreds of likers

We’re all retailers… that’s 4 for the time of 1! A bargain…

If you integrate your Facebook page, any news and images you add to your frooly shop also go to:
1) your frooly shop
2) frooly.com marketplace – news from the community
3) Facebook fanpage and your likers
4) And its good for Google SEO – which means more traffic!

Don’t forget – frooly measures our shops and those who are most proactive get a higher reputation score and feature higher up in our listings.

How do I integrate with Facebook?

Release Notes

Hello All,

Just to introduce myself as I've not written on the blog before, I'm Carl and I work as a lead web developer at frooly.

I'm sure you've all noticed that from time to time changes are made to either frooly.com or the sites we host for you; either new features or bug fixes for existing ones! well we've decided that we don't always communicate what's been created/fixed as well as we could so going forward whenever we release new stuff I'll be documenting it here on the blog in the form of a short list of release notes. Some of it may sound a bit like technical jargon but they do explain what's been done

So without further a do here are the ones for the content we released yesterday (01/12/11)

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
  • Implemented new underpinning technology of how we access data from the database this has allowed us to handle stuff like punctuation in product search without effecting the performance of the site it will also make data access on the whole A LOT faster as we convert old stuff to use the new technology - what you really need to know is it means product search is better/faster and will eventually lead to much better site speed overall
  • We now parse out external links in product descriptions
  • Changed the signup text to "signup for faster checkout & special offers"
  • Changed the no products found text
Client Sites (Your Sites)
  • We've changed the big blocky buttons on the client sites to match the smaller/sleeker frooly.com ones
  • converted/converting all the buttons to use "sprites"; means that we only load the image once no matter how buttons are on the page, this will speed up performance and has been done for all icons on the site
  • General tidying up of some issues on client designs, such as broken forms and cross browser issues
Custom Site Design Fixes (Premium, bespoke designs)

Blue-Eye-Aviation
  • finances can now be seen on the finance screen
  • fixed a bug where you couldn't access submenu's when logged in
Sleepe-tee
  • shop vat/delivery text is once again aligned
  • shop search boxes are once again aligned
General Bug Fixes
  • Fixed alignment in manage products
  • Fixed an issue when adding to basket when using your own domain for your site and the user was logged out
  • Fixed an issue where if you went to frooly.com/frooly the site crashed
  • Fixed an issue where if you pressed continue shopping on frooly.com after adding to basket it took you to the homepage
  • Fixed score breakdown display in IE
  • Fixed shareThis in IE
  • Fixed facebook comments on product pages not always loading
  • Fixed a hover issue if a lot of items in navigation
  • Fixed an issue where featured controls showed too many products after edit if you'd changed the number
That's all folks!
